A recent report from Wired describes the “totally unnecessary” convertible roof on the new Rolls Royce Dawn. The six-layer top to the $340,000 car retracts and reappears almost silently, relying on a half-dozen hydraulic valves that are powered by an electric motor which itself is buried beneath layers of sound insulation. The author notes,
It’s doubtful that anyone, anywhere ever complained about their Rolls having an acoustically unacceptable roof. But the company prides itself on staying ahead of customers’ wants and needs. Nobody complained about the knobs not being “weighty” enough, either, but why risk it?
